ALFRISTON 5521 1030. Part of the duchy of Lancaster. The market and fairs were to be held by the king and his heirs as dukes of Lancaster. In the 1334 Lay Subsidy, Alfriston was valued with part of Blatchington at £39.
M (Charter) Tues; gr 24 May 1406, by K Hen IV (CChR, 1341–1417, p. 431). To be held at the king’s town.

F (Charter) vf, Philip and James (1 May); gr 24 May 1406, by K Hen IV (CChR, 1341–1417, p. 431). To be held at the king’s town.

ARUNDEL 5016 1072. Borough 1086 (BF, p. 169; Darby, p. 367). 1334 Subsidy £63.69. On the opposite bank of the river and downstream from the Anglo-Saxon burh of Burpham, Sussex (q.v.), which it may have replaced (Beresford, p. 492). Market town c.1600 (Everitt, p. 475). Fair 1587, 6 Dec (Harrison, p. 397). See also VCH Sussex, v, part i, pp. 61–2.
M (Prescriptive: borough) recorded 1086. The market evidently existed by 1086, when the earl’s sheriff took toll. By 1288, markets were held on Mon and Thurs, the former later moving to Sat. By the early fifteenth century, the corporation leased tolls from the earl, so that by 1586 the Thurs and Sat markets were claimed as the property of the town. The Thurs market was the most important by the seventeenth century; before 1805 it was transferred to Wednesday. In 1766 the Sat market was said to have been long disused, although it was held in 1788. The latest evidence for the Sat market dates from 1855 (VCH Sussex, v, part i, p. 61).
F (Charter) vfm, Invention of the Cross (3 May); gr 1 Aug 1285, by K Edw I to Richard le fitz Aleyn. To be held at the manor (CChR, 1257–1300, p. 320). Fair recorded in 1586 (when it lasted one day). It was recorded in 1784, although the date had altered as a result of the calendar change. It was recorded in 1831 and 1888, but fell into disuse after 1907 (VCH Sussex, v, part i, p. 62).
F (Charter) Nicholas (6 Dec); gr 1 Aug 1285, by K Edw I to Richard le fitz Aleyn (VCH Sussex, v, part i, p. 62). This fair is not recorded in the Calendar of Charter Rolls. Fair recorded in 1586 (when it lasted more than one day). It was recorded in 1784, although the date had altered as a result of the calendar change. It was last recorded in 1831.
F (Prescriptive) Exaltation of the Cross (14 Sept); recorded 1288 (VCH Sussex, v, part i, p. 62). Fair recorded in 1586 (when it lasted one day). It was recorded in 1784, although the date had altered as a result of the calendar change. It was recorded in 1831 and 1888, but fell into disuse after 1907.
A fair on 10 Aug was recorded in 1586. It was recorded in 1784, although the date had altered as a result of the calendar change. It fell into disuse soon afterwards (VCH Sussex, v, part i, p. 62).

BATTLE 5750 1162. Borough c.1180 (BF, p. 169). 1334 Subsidy £94.13. The value for Battle in the 1334 Lay Subsidy has been calculated by adding together the values for Middleborough, Sandlake and Mountjoy, the ancient divisions of the borough. Abbey founded 1066–7. Market town c.1600 (Everitt, p. 475). See also E. Searle, Lordship and Community: Battle Abbey and its Banlieu, 1066–1538 (Toronto, 1974), pp. 80–1, 206, 352–3, 365–6.
M (Prescriptive: borough) recorded 1066x87, possibly 1066x70, mercatum, held by M of the ch of St Martin of Battle (Regesta 1066–87, no. 13). This writ may not be entirely reliable, but it is almost identical to a writ of K Hen I, dated 1103x06, which confirmed to the M their customs within and without the market, as granted by K Wil I (Regesta 1066–87, no. 13; Regesta, ii, no. 752). In 1114x22, K Hen I confirmed to the ch of Battle the Sun market granted by K Wil I (Regesta, ii, no. 1348). A spurious charter of K Wil I, ostensibly from 1070–1, grants the ch of St Martin of Battle a Sun market (Regesta, i, no. 61). The medieval market was held on Sun (E. Searle, Lordship and Community: Battle Abbey and its Banlieu, 1066–1538 (Toronto, 1974), pp. 80–1).
F (Grant: other) Martin in the Summer (4 Jul); gr 1114x22, by K Hen I to ch of Battle (Regesta, ii, no. 1348). Searle (pp. 80–1, 392) mentions a fair on the feast of St Martin in the Winter (11 Nov), but this may be a confusion with the summer fair.

BIDLINGTON 5178 1103. 1334 Subsidy £52.81. See also VCH Sussex, vi, part i, p. 210.
F (Prescriptive) f, Mary Magdalen (22 Jul); recorded 1399 (VCH Sussex, vi, part i, p. 210). Fair recorded in 1498.

BODIAM 5781 1258. Dalingridge was the builder of Bodiam castle.
M (Charter) Sat; gr 25 Feb 1383, by K Ric II to Edward Dalyngregg [Dalingridge], kn and Elizabeth his wife (CChR, 1341–1417, p. 281). To be held at the manor.
F (Charter) vf, Augustine in May (26 May); gr 25 Feb 1383, by K Ric II to Edward Dalyngregg [Dalingridge], kn and Elizabeth his wife (CChR, 1341–1417, p. 281). To be held at the manor.

BRAMBER 5186 1106. Borough 1248 (BF, p. 170). Mint 1135–54. 1334 Subsidy £15. Downstream from Steyning, Sussex (q.v.). See also VCH Sussex, vi, part i, pp. 209–10.
M (Prescriptive: borough, mint) recorded 1086, held by William de Braose. In 1086, in a plea between William de Braose and the abbey of Fécamp, it was judged that toll throughout the week should belong to the abbey, except for half of that on Saturdays which should go to William, and that ships going to the harbour (portus) at St Cuthman’s [Steyning] should only pay 2d. for each ascent and descent, ‘unless they make another market at William’s castle’, i.e. at Bramber (Regesta 1066–87, no. 146).
M (Charter) Mon, Thurs; gr 5 Aug 1316, by K Edw II to William de Braose and John de Mowbray and Alina his wife and the heirs of the bodies of John and Alina (CChR, 1300–26, p. 315). Mandate to the sh of Sussex to proclaim that markets will be held at the king’s town on Mon and Thurs, 18 Sept 1324 (CCR, 1323–7, p. 222). Market conf 13 Apr 1332 by K Edw III to John de Moubray, son and heir of the bodies of John and Alina (CChR, 1300–26, p. 315). Thurs market granted to Thomas de Mowbray, earl of Nottingham by K Ric II in 1383. Market at Bramber may have fallen into disuse in the late fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, when no profits from toll are recorded. It had definitely lapsed by 1595 (VCH Sussex, vi, part i, p. 210).
F (Prescriptive) recorded 1288 (VCH Sussex, vi, part i, p. 209).
F (Charter) vfm, Augustine (26 May); gr 5 Aug 1316, by K Edw II to William de Braose and John de Mowbray and Alina his wife and the heirs of the bodies of John and Alina (CChR, 1300–26, p. 315). To be held at the manor. The date of the fair was probably 26 May, i.e. the feast of Archbishop Augustine. Fair conf 13 Apr 1332 by K Edw III to John de Moubray, son and heir of John [de Mowbray] and Alina (CChR, 1327–41, p. 269).
F (Charter) vfm, Denis (9 Oct); gr 5 Aug 1316, by K Edw II to William de Braose and John de Mowbray and Alina his wife and the heirs of the bodies of John and Alina (CChR, 1300–26, p. 315). To be held at the manor. Fair conf 13 Apr 1332 by K Edw III to John de Moubray, son and heir of John [de Mowbray] and Alina (CChR, 1327–41, p. 269).

F (Charter) Assumption (15 Aug) to last 3 days; gr 1383, by K Ric II to Thomas Mowbray, earl of Nottingham (VCH Sussex, vi, part i, p. 210). A fair is recorded in 1445 and 1498; VCH provides no later evidence (VCH Sussex, vi, part i, p. 210).

BRIGHTON 5307 1045. 1334 Subsidy £102.50. Market town c.1600 (Everitt, p. 475).
M (Charter) Thurs; gr 24 Jul 1312, by K Edw II to John de Warenna, earl of Surrey (CChR, 1300–26, p. 194). To be held at the manor.

BROADWATER 5147 1043. 1334 Subsidy £60. See also VCH Sussex, vi, part i, p. 76.
M (Charter) Mon; gr 17 Jul 1312, by K Edw II to Ralph de Cammoys. To be held at the manor (CChR, 1300–26, p. 194). On 20 Nov 1375, K Edw III granted Thomas Cammoys, kinsman and heir of Ralph de Cammoys, a Sat market in lieu (CChR, 1341–1417, p. 230). On 15 Dec 1383, K Ric II granted Thomas de Camoys a Mon market in lieu (CChR, 1341–1417, p. 289). In 1441–2, the market, stated to be on Sat, was alleged to be detrimental to that at Steyning, Sussex (q.v). Market had fallen into disuse by 1493 (VCH Sussex, vi, part i, p. 234).
F (Prescriptive) vf, Barnabas the apostle (11 Jun); feria recorded 1279, held by John de Cameys and Margareta his wife. In 1279, John and Margaret successfully claimed to hold the fair at the manor, of old (QW, p. 755). On 17 Jun 1312, K Edw II granted Ralph de Cammoys a fair on vfm Barnabas, to be held at the manor (CChR, 1300–26, p. 194). Fair recorded in 1493 and 1502 and survived until c.1922 (VCH Sussex, vi, part i, p. 76).

(CR, 1242–7, p. 327).

A fair was held on 12 May in 1888, which may have been the continuation of this fair after the calendar change (VCH Sussex, ix, p. 196).
F (Charter) vf+2, Bartholomew (24 Aug); gr 16 Jun 1310, by K Edw II to John de Britannia, earl of Richmond (CChR, 1300–26, p. 137).

M (Prescriptive: borough, mint) Wed, Sat; recorded twelfth century (VCH Sussex, iii, p. 97). Market recorded on 26 Apr 1227 (CChR, 1226–57, p. 34). K Hen III inspected a charter referring to a market on 16 Nov 1228 and on 4 May 1233 (CChR, 1226–57, pp. 87, 179). Markets were held by the overlords of the city, including the earls of Cornwall, until the grant of the city to the citizens in 1316 (VCH Sussex, iii, p. 97).
F (Grant: other) 1+f+6, gr 1107, by K Hen I to ch of Holy Trinity at Chichester. The details of the grant are known from a notification by K Hen I to Richard de Belmeis and the reeve of Chichester and the barons of Sussex that he has confirmed to the ch of the Holy Trinity at Chichester a fair of eight days duration at the season fixed by Bp Ralph, namely one day before the feast and six days after it (Regesta, ii, no. 810). On 3 Aug 1205, K John granted the ch of Chichester and Simon bp of Chichester that the date of the fair was to be moved from the feast of Faith the Virgin (6 Oct), as granted by K Hen I, to the vigil of Holy Trinity (Easter dep); it was still to last 8 days (RCh, pp. 135–6). Fair noted in 1170–2, 1210, 1212 (PR, 16 Hen II, p. 151; PR, 17 Hen II, p. 135; PR, 18 Hen II, p 132; PR, 12 John, p. 4; PR, 14 John, pp. 8, 9). Bp of Chichester was holding an eight day fair by a charter of K John in 1279, although it was alleged that it was not held according to the charter (QW, p. 759). On 22 Feb 1338, K Edw III confirmed the 1107 charter to Robert de Stretford, bp of Chichester (CChR, 1327–41, p. 440). On 30 Jun 1367, it was stated that K John had granted the bp of Chichester an 8 day fair on the feast of Denis (9 Oct) and that William de Lenne, bp of Chichester, had appropriated an extra half day to the fair (CIM, iii, no. 520).
F (Grant: other) vfm, Michael (29 Sept); feria gr 1227x16 Feb 1254, by K Hen III to R[ichard] earl of Cornwall. Mandate to the sh of Sussex to proclaim the fair and cause it to be held (CR, 1253–4, p. 28). This was presumably one of the two fairs claimed by Edmund, earl of Cornwall in 1288. Richard fitz Alan alleged that this was not a fair, but a congregation of men outside the suburb, of which he claimed the profit (VCH Sussex, iii, p. 98).
F (Prescriptive) vfm, James (25 Jul); recorded 1288, held by Richard fitz Alan (VCH Sussex, iii, p. 98). Richard fitz Alan claimed the fair, near the Hospital of St James outside the city. F (Charter) vf, James the Apostle (25 Jul); gr 16 Jul 1247, by K Hen III to Peter of Savoy (CChR, 1226–57, p. 324).

EAST LAVANT 4862 1084. 1334 Subsidy £58.17. It is possible that the value in the 1334 Lay Subsidy refers to both East Lavant and West Lavant (Glasscock, p. 307).
F (Charter) vf, Nativity of Mary (8 Sept); gr 1 Jun 1314, by K Edw II to W archbp of Canterbury. To be held at the manor (CChR, 1300–26, p. 274). There is no evidence for this fair between the 1370s and 1390s; it is possible that it was not established (Mate, pp. 63–4).

EASTBOURNE 5608 990. Market town c.1600 (Everitt, p. 475).

FINDON 5116 1085. 1334 Subsidy £60. See also VCH Sussex, vi, part i, p. 29.
M (Charter) Tues; gr 22 May 1261, by K Hen III to Walter de Clifford. To be held at the manor (CChR, 1257–1300, p. 36). In 1275, the market was alleged to be damaging the boroughs of Bramber rape (VCH Sussex, vi, part i, p. 29). In 1279, William de Breuse was holding the market, which he claimed had been held since the Conquest (QW, p. 760). Market recorded in 1380, 1425 and possibly in 1477; there is no later evidence (VCH Sussex, vi, part i, p. 29).

HARTING 4783 1194. 1334 Subsidy £36.66. The grid reference and the value from the 1334 Lay Subsidy relate to South Harting. Henry Husse was holding the town of Harting in 1316 (FA, v, p. 141). See also VCH Sussex, iv, pp. 14–15.
M (Charter) Wed; gr 29 Aug 1271, by K Hen III to Henry de Husee. To be held at the manor (CChR, 1257–1300, p. 176). Henry de Husey was holding the market in 1279 (QW, p. 756).

HASTINGS 5821 1095. Borough early tenth century (Defence, pp. 205–6). Mint c.979–1154. Borough in Domesday Book (Darby, p. 367). The town developed around the castle built on the cliff c.1069. This replaced the earlier port, which was being eroded by the sea (Beresford, p. 494; VCH Sussex, ix, pp. 10–11). Market town c.1600 (Everitt, p. 475). See also VCH Sussex, ix, pp. 13–14.
M (Prescriptive: borough, mint) recorded 1103x6, mercatum (Regesta 1066–87, no. 13). The rights that the men of Hastings had in their market were the model for those that K Hen I in 1103x6 granted to the monks of Battle in theirs, as K Wil I had granted them. The separate record of the writ of K Wil I may be a forgery based on that of K Hen I (Regesta 1066–87, no. 13; Regesta, ii, no. 752). At some later, probably post-medieval, date markets were held on Wed and Sat. Wed market fell into disuse in 1835 (VCH Sussex, ix, p. 13; F.E. Sawyer, ‘Sussex markets and fairs’, Sussex Archaeological Collections, xxxvi (Lewes, 1888), p. 188). At some later, probably post-medieval, date fairs were held on Whit Tuesday, on 26 and 27 Jul and on Clement (23 Nov) (VCH Sussex, ix, p. 13).

HEATHFIELD 5583 1216. See also VCH Sussex, ix , p. 201.
M (Grant: other) Thurs; mercatum, gr 6 Apr 1234, by K Hen III to bp of Chichester. To be held at the manor. Mandate to the sh of Sussex to proclaim the market and cause it to be held (CR, 1231–4, p. 400). Granted by K Edw II to John bp of Chichester on 7 Feb 1316 (CChR, 1300–26. p. 306). Although the manor of ‘Hadfeld’ in the 1234 grant is identified as Henfield in the index of CR, 1231–4, ‘Hadfeld’ is identified as Heathfield in A. Mawer and F.M. Stenton eds., Place-Names of Sussex (Cambridge, 1930) ii, p. 463. This identification is confirmed by the 1316 grant.
F (Charter) vfm, Richard the Confessor (3 Apr or 16 Jun); gr 7 Feb 1316, by K Edw II to John bp of Chichester (CChR, 1300–26. p. 306). The VCH attributes this fair to the Translation of St Richard (16 Jun), apparently on the grounds that in 1792 a fair was held on the equivalent date after the calendar change (27 Jun; this fair fell into disuse by 1888). However, there was also a fair held on 14 Apr, which before the calendar change would be equivalent to the other feast of St Richard (3 Apr).

HORSHAM 5170 1306. Borough 1235 (BF, p. 171). 1334 Subsidy £36.67. Market town c.1600 (Everitt, p. 475). Fair 1587, 24 Jun; 27 Jul; 19 Nov (Harrison, pp. 394–6). See VCH Sussex, vol. 6 pt. 2, pp. 136; 171–3..

Markets and fairs are recorded in 1500–1 (Mate, p. 75).

LEWES 5416 1102. Borough early tenth century (Defence, pp. 207–8). Mint 924–39, 970s–1154. 1334 Subsidy £40.50. Borough with tolls in 1066 (Defence, pp. 207–8; VCH Sussex, i, p. 435). After the Norman Conquest, a substantial castle town of the Warenne family and later a county town of Sussex. Market town c.1600 (Everitt, p. 475). Fair 1587, Tues in Whit week (Harrison, p. 394).
M (Prescriptive: borough, mint) recorded 1066, held by king and Earl Warenne. Domesday Book shows that there was a flourishing market by 1066, its revenues presumably shared between the king and the earl (VCH Sussex, i, p. 435). About 1089, William Earl Warenne granted the priory of St Pancras, Lewes, rights of pre-emption in wood, flesh and fish in the market at Lewes on three days in the week, viz Tues, Thurs and Sat from Whitsun to Lammas, and after Lammas the common market with the men of Lewes (L.F. Salzman ed., The Chartulary of the Priory of St Pancras of Lewes, 2 vols (Sussex Record Society 38, 1932), pp. 7–9).

MARESFIELD 5466 1240. 1334 Subsidy £82.50.

F (Letter Close) vfm, Bartholomew (24 Aug); gr 8 Nov 1301, by K Edw I (CCR, 1296–1302, p. 473). To be held at the king’s manor. Mandate to the sh to proclaim the fair and cause it to be held.
F (Letter Close) vf, George (23 Apr); gr 27 Jul 1350, by K Edw III (CCR, 1349–54, p. 245). To be held at the chapel of Nutley in Queen Philippa’s town of Maresfield, for her life. Mandate to the sh of Sussex to proclaim the fair.

MAYFIELD 5586 1270. In the 1334 Lay Subsidy, Mayfield and Wadhurst, Sussex (q.v.) were valued together at £180.

F (Charter) vfm, Dunstan (19 May); gr 7 Nov 1261, by K Hen III to B archbp of Canterbury. To be held at the manor (CChR, 1257–1300, p. 38). On 1 Jun 1314, K Edw II granted W archbp of Canterbury a fair at the manor on vf Dunstan (CChR, 1300–26, p. 274). On 5 Mar 1394, K Ric II granted William archbp of Canterbury a fair at the manor on vfm Dunstan (CChR, 1341–1417, p. 346).
F (Charter) vfm, All Saints (1 Nov); gr 5 Mar 1394, by K Ric II to William archbp of Canterbury. To be held at the manor (CChR, 1341–1417, p. 346).

MIDHURST 4887 1215. Borough 1248. In 1279, it was said to have been a borough from ‘time immemorial’ (BF, p. 171; QW, p. 756). 1334 Subsidy £55. Market town c.1600 (Everitt, p. 475).
M (Prescriptive: borough) recorded 1223, mercatum, held by Savaricus de Bohum (CRR, xi, no. 891).

NEW SHOREHAM 5216 1052. Borough 1208–9 (BF, p. 172). 1334 Subsidy £120. Town established by the mouth of the river Adur in 1086x96 was called New Shoreham, to distinguish it from the earlier settlement (VCH Sussex, vi, part i, pp. 138, 144). Market town c.1600 (Everitt, p. 475). See also VCH Sussex, vi, part i, p. 156.
M (Prescriptive: borough) Wed, Sat; recorded 1279, mercatum, held by William de Breuse. Held in the town (QW, p. 760). It is not clear whether these markets continued to function (VCH Sussex, vi, part i, p. 156). A market was recorded at Shoreham in 1500 (Mate, p. 74). A charter of 1607 granted a Tues market (VCH Sussex, vi, part i, p. 156).
F (Grant: other) feria gr 1202, by K John to William de Braosa (Rot de Obl et Fin, p. 182). Fair recorded c.1230 (VCH Sussex, vi, part i, p. 156). William de Breuse was holding a two day fair on the Exaltation of Holy Cross (14 Sept) in 1279 (QW, p. 760). Fair recorded in 1368. The fair may have fallen into disuse (VCH Sussex, vi, part i, p. 156). Profits of the fair were just 21d. in 1500 (Mate, p. 74).

NEW WINCHELSEA 5903 1173. Borough 1283 (BF, p. 172). Site laid out in 1283, to replace nearby Old Winchelsea (q.v.) (VCH Sussex, ix, p. 63). The new town acquired the liberties of Old Winchelsea, presumably including the market held by the men of Winchelsea and perhaps also a fair. New Winchelsea went into decline as a result of French raids and the silting up of the estuary in the fourteenth century (Beresford, p. 498). Market town c.1600 (Everitt, p. 475). See also VCH Sussex, ix, p. 70.
M (Prescriptive: borough) Thurs; market transferred from Old Winchelsea, Sussex (q.v.) in 1283.
F (Prescriptive) f+2, Invention of Holy Cross (3 May). This fair, established at Old Winchelsea, Sussex (q.v.) in 1209, may have transferred to New Winchelsea in 1283.

NEWBRIDGE 5048 1188. Now a farm in Pulborough, Sussex (Beresford, p. 491). The grid references are to Pulborough.
F (Grant: other) vf, Simon and Jude the apostles (28 Oct); gr 1227x72, by K Hen III to Walter de Insular’ and Florencia his wife. Fair recorded in 1279, when Walter and Florence successfully claimed that they held it by a charter of K Hen III. It was stated that the fair was three days long, but also that it was held on vf Simon and Jude (QW, p. 758). In 1375, the fair was known as the borough fair (Beresford, p. 491).

OLD WINCHELSEA 5940 1175. Borough 1283 (BF, p. 172). Possibly the mint town ‘Wencles’ c.973–9 (D.M. Metcalf, An Atlas of Anglo-Saxon and Norman Coin Finds, c.973–1086 (London, 1998), pp. 231, 236). In 1086 probably part of the manor of ‘Rameslie’ (refer also to entry for Rye, Sussex (q.v.)). The name Winchelsea is first recorded early in the twelfth century. The place soon became a busy port and town, which was destroyed by incursions of the sea between 1250 and 1288. The precise site is uncertain: the grid reference denotes a place on the modern coast east of Winchelsea and SSE of Rye (cf. W.D. Cooper, The History of Winchelsea (London, 1850), p. 1), but the site of the settlement may be further out to sea. The liberties of Old Winchelsea, presumably including a market and perhaps also a fair, passed to New Winchelsea, Sussex (q.v.), the site of which was laid in 1283 (VCH Sussex, ix, p. 63; Beresford, p. 498). See also VCH Sussex, ix, p. 70.
M (Prescriptive: borough) recorded 1200, mercatum, held by A of Fiscamp [Fécamp, Normandy]. Nova Oblata: A of Fiscamp owed 5m. for moving the market beyond the cemetery (PR, 2 John, p. 248). This market presumably ceased in or before 1283 and was not transferred to New Winchelsea, where the A of Fécamp had no rights.
M (Charter) Thurs; mercatum, gr 29 Mar 1209, by K John to John de Gestling. To be held on his fee at ‘Westwincheles’ (RCh, p. 185b). On 17 Nov 1215, the men of Winchelsea were granted that the Thurs market beyond the town on the fee of John de Gestlinges would in future be held in the town, in front of the ch of the Blessed Thomas (RLC, i, p. 237). Mandate to the bailiff of Winchelsea to move the market because of the innundation of the sea, 18 Aug 1262 (CR, 1261–4, p. 148). This market was presumably transferred to New Winchelsea in 1283.
F (Charter) f+2, Invention of Holy Cross (3 May); feria gr 29 Mar 1209, by K John to John de Gestling (RCh, p. 185b). To be held on his fee at ‘Westwincheles’. This fair may have come into the possession of the men of Winchelsea and consequently may have been transferred to New Winchelsea in 1283, but that is far from certain. Otherwise, the fair ceased in or before 1283.

OTHAM COURT 5588 1058. In Dill hundred, near Hailsham (A. Mawer and F.M. Stenton eds., The Place-Names of Sussex, ii (Cambridge, 1930), p. 437).
F (Prescriptive) vf, Laurence (10 Aug); recorded 1279, held by A of Begeham [Bayham] (QW, p. 756). It was stated that the fair ought to be held by Qu Eleanor, the king's mother, as part of the barony of Aquila.

PAGHAM 4883 975. 1334 Subsidy £22.09. A settlement near Pagham Harbour and distinct from, but associated with, the lost port of Withering, Sussex (q.v.). See Lindsay Fleming, History of Pagham, vol 1 (Ditchling, 1949), esp. pp. 46–8; 53–7; 184–9.
M (Charter) Thurs; mercatum, gr 1 Apr 1204, by K John to archbp of Canterbury (RCh, p. 124b). To be held at the door portus (port or market) of St Thomas of Pagham. In the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries the 'port of Pagham' usually meant Withering, so that the market granted in 1204 was probably at Withering (q.v.).
M (Charter) Mon; gr 1 Jun 1314, by K Edw II to W archbp of Canterbury. To be held at the manor (CChR, 1300–26, p. 274). This market was probably intended for Pagham itself. There is no evidence for this market between the 1370s and 1390s; it is possible that it was not established (Mate, pp. 63–4).
F (Charter) Sun before Ascension of the Lord to Sun after Ascension of the Lord (Easter dep); feria gr 1 Apr 1204, by K John to archbp of Canterbury (RCh, p. 124b).
F (Charter) Mon and Tues in Whit week (Easter dep); gr 1 Jun 1314, by K Edw II to W archbp of Canterbury. To be held at the manor (CChR, 1300–26, p. 274). There is no evidence for this fair between the 1370s and 1390s; it is possible that it was not established (Mate, pp. 63–4).

PARROCK 5451 1348. 1334 Subsidy £51.03.
M (Prescriptive) Sat; recorded 1279, mercatum, held by John de la Parroke (QW, p. 754).
F (Prescriptive) vfm, Trans of Edmund the confessor (9 Jun); feria recorded 1279, held by John de la Parroke (QW, p. 754).

PETWORTH 4977 1218. 1334 Subsidy £168.75. Market town c.1600 (Everitt, p. 475).
M (Prescriptive) Sat; recorded 1279, mercatum, held by Alienora de Percy. Alienora was holding the town and its liberties by enfeoffment of her late husband Henry de Percy, for the term of her life. She successfully claimed that her husband and his ancestors held the market (QW, p. 754). A market was recorded in 1347–8, 1348–9, 1349, 1349–50 and 1352–3 (L.F. Salzman ed., Minister’s Accounts of the Manor of Petworth, 1347–53 (Sussex Record Society 55, Lewes, 1955), pp. 5, 21, 31, 44, 52, 59, 62, 66).
F (Prescriptive) f+7, Edmund the King (20 Nov); feria recorded 1279, held by Alienora de Percy. Alienora was holding the town and its liberties by enfeoffment of her late husband Henry de Percy, for the term of her life. She successfully claimed that her husband and his ancestors held the fair (QW, p. 754). The fair on the feast of Edmund the King was recorded in 1348–9 and in 1349–50 (L.F. Salzman ed., Minister’s Accounts of the Manor of Petworth, 1347–53 (Sussex Record Society 55, Lewes, 1955), pp. 22, 46).

PEVENSEY 5640 1050. Borough 1066 (BF, p. 171; Darby, p. 367). Mint 1066–1154. Port of Anglo-Saxon Pevensey silted up and a new town was founded in 1207; its site is uncertain (Beresford, p. 495).

STEYNING 5178 1111. Borough 1066 (BF, p. 172; Darby, p. 367). Mint 1017–1100, possibly also in K Steph’s reign. 1334 Subsidy £49.50. Pre-Conquest royal manor (VCH Sussex, vi, part i, p. 226). It may have succeeded Cissbury, Sussex (q.v.). Market town c.1600 (Everitt, p. 475). See also VCH Sussex, vi, part i, pp. 234–5, and T.P. Hudson, ‘The origins of Steyning and Bramber, Sussex’, Southern History, 2 (1980), pp. 11–29. Steyning lay just upstream from Bramber, Sussex (q.v.).
M (Prescriptive: borough, mint). There had probably been a market at Steyning since the early eleventh century. The reference to toll at Steyning in 1073, when William de Braose granted the tithe of it to his college at Bramber, indicates active trade (VCH Sussex, vi, part i, p. 234). William de Braose made substantial encroachments on to the rights of the abbey of Fécamp in Steyning, acquiring a share of the tolls and property in the town, and his descendants maintained and increased those claims (Hudson, ‘The origins of Steyning and Bramber’). In 1086, in a plea between William de Braose and the abbey of Fécamp, it was judged that toll throughout the week should belong to the abbey, except for half of that on Saturdays which should go to William, and that ships going to the harbour (portus) at St Cuthman’s [Steyning] should only pay 2d. for each ascent and descent, ‘unless they make another market at William’s castle’ (Regesta 1066–87, no. 146; the castle was at Bramber). In 1279, William de Breuse and the A of Fiscampis [Fécamp] were holding markets on Wed and Sat in the town (QW, p. 760). In 1441–2, Sir John Cornwall, lord of Steyning, alleged that the market was being damaged by that at Broadwater, Sussex (q.v.) (VCH Sussex, vi, part i, p. 234). In the fifteenth century, the As of Syon, successor to the rights of Fécamp abbey, alleged that the market was damaged by that at Tarring, Sussex (q.v.) (Mate, p. 74). In 1586, there was a market twice a week (VCH Sussex, vi, part i, pp. 234–5).
