Hamilton, Cicely Mary, Beware! A Warning to Suffragists: rhymes ([London] : Published by the Artists' Suffrage League (Printed by the Women's Printing Society, Ltd.) [1908?]) [Heisler] P1031
At the moment of this pamphlet’s publication, its author Cicely Hamilton was becoming increasingly committed to the cause of female suffrage, after decades as a teacher and actor. It is typical of her early writings in its witty, seemingly light-hearted register, but it is a carefully crafted and effective piece of satirical propaganda, exemplified by this verse:
‘This is the cosy / Little home / Whence no nice woman / Wants to roam / She shuts the doors and windows tight, / And never stirs / From morn to night. / With pots and pans / She spends her life - / Who would not be / A happy wife?’
