M (Grant: other) gr ante 1104, by Eudo Dapifer to M of St John the Baptist, Colchester (CChR, 1226–57, pp. 423–4). In Oct 1198, K Ric I confirmed to St John the Baptist of Colchester and the M the market (forum) which had been granted to them by Eudo Dapifer. This was confirmed by K Hen III on 22 Mar 1253 (CChR, 1226–57, pp. 423–4) This was apparently a market outside the walls in the area controlled by the abbey.
M (Prescriptive: borough, mint) recorded 1154x89, forum, held by burgesses of Colchester (CChR, 1226–57, p. 411). An unspecified number of markets confirmed by the justices in eyre in the time of K Hen II were referred to in charter dated 6 Dec 1189 (CChR, 1226–57, p. 411). Market days were Wed and Sat in 1285 (VCH Essex, ix, p. 269). Market allegedly damaged by that at Salcott, Essex (q.v.) in 1318 (W.G. Benham ed., The Red Paper Book of Colchester (Colchester, 1902) p. 45). In the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, a market appears to have been held every day of the week. In 1380, there was a complaint about an unlicensed Thurs market. In 1575, Wed and Sat were market days (VCH Essex, ix, p. 269).
F (Charter) vfm+1, John the Baptist (24 Jun); gr ante 1104, by Eudo Dapifer (?) to abbey of John the Baptist, Colchester (S.A. Benham ed., The Red Paper Book of Colchester (Colchester, 1902), p. 40; W.G. Benham ed., The Oath Book or Red Parchment Book of Colchester (Colchester, 1907), p. 212). In 1135x54, K Steph granted his peace to the fair (Regesta, iii, no. 217). In Oct 1198, K Ric I confirmed to St John the Baptist of Colchester and the M the fair of four days at the feast of St John the Baptist, which had been granted to them. This was confirmed by K Hen III on 22 Mar 1253 (CChR, 1226–57, pp. 424–5). It is possible that the fair existed before it was granted to the abbey. It continued until the nineteenth century (VCH Essex, ix, p. 272).
F (Charter) vf, Invention of Holy Cross (3 May); gr 1157, by K Hen I to St John’s abbey, Colchester (VCH Essex, ix, p. 274). To be held on the castle waste, between St Helen’s chapel and High Street. There is no further evidence for this fair.

There is evidence for the fair in 1318, 1439 and 1498. It continued until 1872 (VCH Essex, iv, p. 273).
F (Letter Patent) Whitsunday and the week following (Easter dep); gr 26 Dec 1258, by K Hen III to Guy de Rupi Forti to whom the king has committed for life the castle and demesnes of Colchester. After Guy’s death, the fair was to revert to the king (CPR, 1247–58, p 534). There is no further evidence for the fair (VCH Essex, iv, p. 274).
F (Charter) vf+6 Denis (9 Oct); gr 4 Feb 1318, by K Edw II to the burgesses of Colchester (CChR, 1300–26, p. 403). The fair may have been held for at least ten years before this. The fair continued until the twentieth century (VCH Essex, ix, p. 273).
Until 1373, a wool market was held privately in a hall in St Runwald’s parish. William Reyne, a bailiff, then moved the market to a cellar below the moot hall. William Reyne claimed to have re-organised a wool fair held annually on the Nativity of John the Baptist and the feast of Mary Magdalene. However, this was probably an expanded wool market held to coincide with the two existing fairs (VCH Essex, ix, p. 274).

M (Charter) Mon; gr 5 Mar 1250, by K Hen III to Hugh de Vere, earl of Oxford (CChR, 1226–57, p. 347). In 1254, the market held by Hugh de Ver’ was allegedly being damaged by that at Halstead, Essex (q.v.) (FF Essex, i, p. 205). Mon market held by earl of Oxford recorded 1318 (W.G. M (Prescriptive: borough) Sat; recorded Nov 1224, mercatum, held by [Gilbert de] Clare, earl of Gloucester. A jury was asked if the market was being damaged by that at Great Dunmow, Essex (q.v.) (CRR, xi, no. 2805; CRR, xii, no. 45). Market held by Gilbert de Clare, earl of Gloucester, recorded in Jan 1296 (CIPM, iii, no. 371).

GREAT CHESTERFORD 5505 2427. 1334 Subsidy £43.59.
M (Prescriptive) recorded 20 Jan 1254, mercatum, held by Roger, earl of Norfolk (Abb Plac, p. 139). On 20 Jan 1254, it was alleged that the market at Newport, Essex (q.v.) was being damaged by that raised at Great Chesterford.

GREAT DUNMOW 5629 2230. 1334 Subsidy £106.36. In 1256, there are references to a 50m. fine which Simon son of Richard made for a market, fair and warren at an unidentified location in Essex (CR, 1254–6, pp. 257, 260). This presumably relates to K Hen III’s grant to Richard son of Simon in Aug 1227 of a market, fair and licence to impark at Great Dunmow, Essex (CChR, 1226–57, p. 56). A Simon son of Richard, with rents in Finchingfield and Toppesfield (Essex) and Haveringland (Norfolk) occurs in a charter of c.1230–62, describing himself as grandson of Simon son of Richard, and son of Richard. In this charter, Simon son of Richard confirmed various grants made by his ancestors in the early thirteenth century; these include references to Great Dunmow church (C. Harper-Bill and R. Mortimer eds., Stoke-by-Clare Cartulary (Woodbridge, 1983) ii, no. 580). Market town c.1600 (Everitt, p. 175). Fair 1587, 25 Apr, 15 Aug (Harrison, pp. 393, 395).
M (Grant: other) Tues; mercatum, gr 30 Oct 1219, by K Hen III to Richard son of Simon. He gave a palfrey to hold the market at his manor (C 60/12 m. 9). 1219, Nova Oblata: he owed a palfrey. The editor of the printed Pipe Roll suggested that although under the heading Nova Oblata, the fine could date from the later years of John’s reign. This appears unlikely (PR, 3 Hen III, pp. xvi, 115). In 1220, Richard son of Simon paid 5m. for a palfrey for having a market (PR, 4 Hen III, p. 116). In Nov 1224, a jury was asked if the market at Dunmow was to the detriment of that at Great Bardfield, Essex (q.v.) (CRR, xi, 2805). In Spring 1225, Richard claimed that the king had conceeded to him a Tues market, if it was not to the detriment of neighbouring markets. As the sh had made an enquiry through three hundreds and the earl of Gloucester’s market at Great Bardfield was on Sat, there ought not to be an inquisition to establish damages (CRR, xii, no. 45). On 19 Aug 1227, K Hen III granted Richard son of Simon a Tues market at his manor by charter (CChR, 1226–57, p. 56). Order to sh of Essex regarding the market, 18 Aug 1227 (RLC, ii, p. 197b).
M (Charter) Fri; mercatum, gr 16 Jun 1254, by K Hen III to John de Berners the elder (Roles Gascons, 1242–54, no. 3790; CPR, 1247–58, p. 305). To be held at the manor.

M (Grant: other) Thurs; gr 30 Apr 1200 x 3 Feb 1265, by either K John or K Hen III to Hugh de Neville (CChR, 1257–1300, p. 52). On 3 Feb 1265, K Hen III granted Hugh de Nevill a Mon market at the manor in lieu of the market formerly granted to him there on Thurs.
F (Charter) vf, Trans of Nicholas (9 May); feria gr 30 Apr 1200, by K John to Hugh de Neville and Joanna his wife (RCh, p. 54).
A market held by Hugh de Neville was recorded in 1257–58, when it was allegedly being damaged by that at Shopland, Essex (q.v.). This could relate to either the Fri or the Thurs market (FF Essex, i, no. 1345).

HADLEIGH 5810 1870. 1334 Subsidy £36.06. Market town c.1600 (Everitt, p. 175). Fair 1587, 29 Sept (Harrison, p. 396).
M (Prescriptive) recorded 28 Nov 1228, held by Hubert de Burgh, earl of Kent and Margaret his wife. On 28 Nov 1228, K Hen III granted Hubert de Burgh, earl of Kent and Margaret his wife unspecified ‘markets’ at four manors, including Hadleigh, as part of a grant of those manors. The day(s) of the market(s) were not given (CChR, 1226–57, p. 82). On 14 Jan 1231, K Hen III granted Hubert de Burgh, earl of Kent, Justiciar, a Wed market, to be held at the manor (CChR, 1226–57, p. 128). Mandate to sh of Essex to make the Wed market known and cause it to be held, which the king by his charter granted and confirmed to Hubert de Burgh, 12 Jan 1231 (CR, 1227–31, p. 470). Market was in the king’s hands on 4 May 1246, when it was to be held on Wed (CR, 1242–7, p. 421).
F (Prescriptive) recorded 1184 (PR, 30 Hen II, p. 135). Part of the land formerly held by Henry de Essex (otherwise known as the Honor of Rayleigh), which had escheated to the Crown. Fair also noted in 1185–7 (PR, 31 Hen II, p. 44; PR, 32 Hen III, p. 198; PR, 33 Hen II, p. 19). This may well be the same fair noted in the estates of Henry of Essex in 1181, described only as ‘the fair of St James’ (25 Jul). It is the only fair accounted for in the estates (PR, 27 Hen II, pp. xxv, 108). On 28 Nov 1228, K Hen III granted Hubert de Burgh, earl of Kent and Margaret his wife unspecified ‘fairs’ at four manors, including Hadleigh, as part of a grant of those manors. The date(s) of the fair(s) are not given. The manor was stated to have been held by Henry de Essex (CChR, 1226–57, p. 82).

HADSTOCK 5558 2448. 1334 Subsidy £30.56. Fair 1587, 17 Jun (Harrison, p. 394).
M (Charter) gr 1129, by K Hen I to Bp Harvey and the ch of Ely (Regesta, ii, no. 1576). The bp’s right to the market was confirmed by K Ric I on 10 Oct 1189 and 1 Jul 1198 and by K Hen III on 3 Jul 1233 (CChR, 1226–57, p. 184). K Edw III confirmed K Hen I’s charter on 3 Jan 1338 (CChR, 1327–41, p. 434).
F (Prescriptive) f, Botolph (17 Jun); recorded 1129, held by Bp Harvey and the ch of Ely (Regesta, ii, no. 1576). The fair was said to have been held in 1066 and under K Wil I (Regesta, ii, no. 1576). The fair was confirmed by K Ric I on 10 Oct 1189 and 1 Jul 1198 and by K Hen III on 3 Jul 1233 (CChR, 1226–57, p. 184). K Edw III confirmed K Hen I’s charter on 3 Jan 1338 (CChR, 1327–41, p. 434). Fair recorded in 1209 (FF Essex, i, p. 48).

HALSTEAD 5815 2306. 1334 Subsidy £141.31. For the descent of the Bourghchier family, see GEC, ii, pp. 247–9. Market town c.1600 (Everitt, p. 175).
M (Charter) Sat; gr 17 Nov 1250, by K Hen III to Abel de St Martin (CChR, 1226–57, p. 349). In Nov 1254, it was alleged that the market was damaging those at Castle Hedingham and Earls Colne, Essex (q.v.) (FF Essex, i, p. 205). In the dispute, Abel alleged that there had been a market there belonging to the king for many years (Essex Markets and Fairs, p. 7). On 25 Oct 1330, Robert de Bousser was granted a Tues market at the manor in lieu of the Sat market he and his ancestors had held (CChR, 1327–41, p. 191). On 6 Mar 1431, Elizabeth, late the wife of Lewis Robessart, kn, was granted a market in dower; the day of the market was not recorded (CCR, 1429–35, p. 81). On 7 Aug 1433, the market (the day of which was not recorded) was granted to Henry Bourghchier, son of William Bourghchier, kn (CCR, 1429–35, p. 217).
M (Charter) Fri; gr 20 Jun 1467, by K Hen VI to Henry, earl of Essex, the king’s uncle. To be held at the town (CChR, 1427–1516, p. 216). This is the same man as Henry Bourghchier, son of William Bourghchier, kn, who was granted the market above in 1433 (GEC, ii, pp. 248–9). It is possible that the Fri market was intended to supersede the market granted in 1433.
F (Charter) vf, Denis (9 Oct); gr 17 Nov 1250, by K Hen III to Abel de St Martin (CChR, 1226–57, p. 349). On 6 Mar 1431, Elizabeth, late the wife of Lewis Robessart, kn, was granted the fair in dower. The feast of the fair was not given (CCR, 1429–35, p. 81). On 7 Aug 1433, the fair, the feast of which was not recorded, was granted to Henry Bourghchier, son of William Bourghchier kn (CCR, 1429–35, p. 217).
F (Charter) vfm+1, George (23 Apr); gr 20 Jun 1467, by K Hen VI to Henry, earl of Essex, the king’s uncle. To be held at the town (CChR, 1427–1516, p. 216). This is the same man as Henry Bourghchier, son of William Bourghchier, kn, who was granted the fair above in 1433. It is possible that the fair on the feast of George was intended to supersede the fair granted in 1433.
F (Charter) vfm+1, Edw the Confessor (13 Oct); gr 20 Jun 1467, by K Hen VI to Henry, earl of Essex, the king’s uncle. To be held at the town (CChR, 1427–1516, p. 216). This is the same man as Henry Bourghchier, son of William Bourghchier, kn, who was granted the fair above in 1433. It is possible that the fair on the feast of Edward the Confessor was intended to supersede the fair granted in 1433.

On 26 Jan 1223, it was alleged that the market was being damaged by that at Sawbridgeworth, Hertfordshire (q.v.), which was subsequently closed (RLC, i, p. 531). Market recorded in 1328; in c.1594 it was described as ‘little’. It had declined by c.1768 and ceased by 1832 (VCH Essex, viii, pp. 175–6).
F (Prescriptive) recorded 1328, held by the lord of Hatfield Regis manor. In 1336, a fair was being held on the Nativity of Mary (8 Sept). By 1460, the date of the fair had been changed to the feast of James (25 Jul). The fair was held on this date until 1753 (VCH Essex, viii, p. 175).

HIGH ONGAR 5565 2038. 1334 Subsidy £40.19. See also VCH Essex, iv, p. 175.
F (Grant: other) vf, Nativity of Mary (8 Sept); feria gr 17 Aug 1220, by K Hen III to William de Muceaus (C 60/12 m. 3). Nova Oblata: William de Monceaus owed a palfrey for having the fair at his town of Old (Veteri) Ongar (PR, 4 Henry III, p. 119).
F (Charter) vf, Nativity of Mary (8 Sept); gr 21 Dec 1229, by K Hen III to Silvester de Everdon, rector of the ch of Old Angre (CChR, 1226–57, p. 108). On 2 Sept 1230, it was stated that Robert de Cern, late rector of the ch of Alta Angr’, had made a fine of 5m. to have a fair at the ch each year until the king came of age. Silvester de Everdon had paid part of the debt owed by Robert de Cern’s executors for the fair (CR, 1227–31, p 433). This grant was made during the minority, probably after late in 1220, when the phrase ‘until the king came of age’ came into general use. This may be identical to the fair granted to William de Monceaus.
There are no further references to a fair (VCH Essex, iv, p. 182 n.5).

HIGH RODING 5603 2173. 1334 Subsidy £33.12.

Mandate to the sh of Essex (CR, 1227–31, p. 506). On 7 Sept 1255, K Hen III granted John de Warrenna a weekly market at the manor. The day of the market was not given (CChR, 1226–57, p. 449). In 1276, the market held by J[ohn] de Warrena, earl of Surrey was considered worthless, as it often failed (CIM, 1219–1307, no. 316).
F (Charter) vfm, All Saints (1 Nov); gr 7 Sept 1255, by K Hen III to John de Warrenna (CChR, 1226–57, p. 449). To be held at the manor.

HORNDON ON THE HILL 5669 1833. Mint 1042–1066. 1334 Subsidy £70.80. Evidently a small urban centre with a mint in the mid eleventh century. Market town c.1600 (Everitt, p. 175).
M (Prescriptive: mint) recorded 4 Mar 1280, held by Robert Giffard, who quitclaimed to K Edw I part of his market (CPR, 1272–81, p. 453). On 20 Jul 1337, Maud de Haudlo held a half share of the market at Horndon (CIM, ii, no. 381; CCR, 1337–39, p. 181). Market recorded on 15 Dec 1343 (CIPM, viii, no. 460).

F (Charter) vfm+5, Exaltation of Holy Cross (14 Sept); gr 16 Apr 1280, by K Edw I to Robert Giffard (CChR, 1257–1300, p. 221). To be held at the manor.

INGATESTONE 5651 1996. 1334 Subsidy £46.34. Fair 1587, 19 Nov (Harrison, p. 396).

KELVEDON 5856 2185. 1334 Subsidy £50.13.
M (Charter) Thurs; gr 28 May 1312, by K Edw II to John Filiol (CChR, 1300–26, pp. 191–2). By another charter on the same day the king granted a Mon market to the same. It is possible that the market was to be held on both Mon and Thurs, or that one charter was intended to supersede the other.
F (Charter) Mon after Whitsunday+2 (Easter dep); gr 28 May 1312, by K Edw II to John Filiol (CChR, 1300–26, pp. 191–2). By another charter on the same day the king granted a fair on vfm Whitsunday to the same.

LATTON 5468 2095. 1334 Subsidy £31.88.
F (Charter) vfm, Decollation of John [the Baptist] (29 Aug); gr 23 Mar 1332, by K Edw III to Augustine le Waleys. To be held at the manor (CChR, 1327–41, p. 260). In 1375, the fair (the feast of which was not given) was quitclaimed to William Berland, kn and Christiana his wife and the heirs and assigns of William (CCR, 1374–77, p. 227).

MALDON 5856 2067. Borough 916 (BF, p. 109; BF, supplement, p. 62). Mint 924–39, 970s–1100. 1334 Subsidy £140.20. Commercial centre and port from the early tenth century. Borough in Domesday Book (Darby, p. 365). Market town c.1600 (Everitt, p. 175). Fair 1587, 25 Mar (Harrison, p. 393).
M (Prescriptive: borough, mint) recorded 20 Nov 1287, held by Richard [de Gravesend] bp of London (Ninth Report of the Royal Commission on Historical Manuscripts, part i (London, 1883), Kraus reprint (1979), p. 41).

MANNINGTREE 6105 2318. Borough 1286x1309 (BF, p. 110). Sheningho (Old Hall, Sheddon or Sharing Hall) is now lost; it was in Manningtree (P.H. Reaney, The Place-Names of Essex (Cambridge, 1935) p. 344). In the 1334 Lay Subsidy, Manningtree and Mistley were valued together at £60.87. Market town c.1600 (Everitt, p. 175).
M (Letter Close) Mon; mercatum, gr 18 Oct 1238, by K Hen III to Hubert de Ruylli. Called Sheningho. Mandate to the sh of Essex to cause him to have the market (CR, 1237–42, p. 110). In 1241, the Pipe roll records that Hubert de Ruilly the elder, ‘earl of Oxford’, owed one sparrowhawk, in part for a grant of a market in ‘Techingho’ (PR, 26 Hen III, p. 227). This is problematic, as it describes Hubert as earl of Oxford; however, the earl between 1231 and 1263 was Hugh de Vere (GEC, x, pp. 213–15). On 22 May 1279, Thomas, son and heir of Richard de Royly quitclaimed to Matilda de Clare, countess of Gloucester and Hertford, the market rights of Manningtree. On 3 Mar 1312, Nicholas, son of Thomas de Royly of Fynchingrefeld, quitclaimed to the As and C of Leghe Canonicorum [Canonsleigh abbey] the market rights of Manningtree. Also on 3 Mar 1312, Geoffrey de Royly of Rames’, son of William de Roylli, quitclaimed to the canonesses of Canonsleigh the market rights of Manningtree (V. London ed., The Cartulary of Canonsleigh Abbey: A Calendar (Devon and Cornwall Record Society, new series, viii, Torquay, 1965) nos. 213, 219, 220). Mon market held at Manningtree by As of Canonsleigh recorded 1318 (W.G. Benham ed., The Red Paper Book of Colchester (Colchester, 1902), p. 45)).
F (Grant: other) feria recorded 1241, held by Hubert de Ruilly the elder, ‘earl of Oxford’. Hubert owed one sparrowhawk, in part for having a fair at ‘Techingho’ (PR, 26 Hen III, p. 227). This entry in the Pipe roll is problematic, as it describes Hubert as earl of Oxford; however, the earl between 1231 and 1263 was Hugh de Vere (GEC, x, pp. 213–15). The corresponding letter close does not record a grant to Hubert of a fair (CR, 1237–42, p. 110).

NEWPORT 5521 2341. Borough 1227 (BF, p. 110). 1334 Subsidy £67.77. Market town c.1600 (Everitt, p. 175). Fair 1587, 6 Nov; held at Newport pond. Harrison also records the ‘Cold’ or ‘Colt’ fair for cattle at Newport pond, which was one of the most important in the country (Harrison, pp. 396, 253) Presumably, this could well be the same fair.
M (Prescriptive: borough) recorded 1141, mercatum, held by Geoffrey de Mandeville (Regesta, iii, no. 274). Empress Matilda granted Geoffrey the right to move the market at Newport to Saffron Walden, Essex (q.v.). On 20 Jan 1254, the market was held by earl Richard of Cornwall, who alleged that it was being damaged by that at Great Chesterford, Essex (q.v.) (Abb Plac, p. 139). Market held by Edmund, earl of Cornwall, recorded in 1297 (M. Midgley ed., Ministers’ Accounts of the Earldom of Cornwall, 1296–7 (Camden 3rd series, lxvi, 1942–5), vol i, p. 449).
F (Charter) v+2, Peter and Paul the Apostles (29 Jun); feria gr 25 Jul 1203, by K John to Gerard de Furnivall (RCh, p. 109).
F (Charter) vfm, Leonard (6 Nov); gr 10 Oct 1227, by K Hen III to brethren of the hospital of St Mary and St Leonard, Newport, co. Essex (CChR, 1226–57, p. 62). To be held at the hospital.

M (Charter) Fri; gr 26 Jul 1355, by K Edw III to Michael, bp of London (CChR, 1341–1417, p. 143). To be held at the manor.
F (Charter) vf, Mary Magdalene (22 Jul); gr 26 Jul 1355, by K Edw III to Michael, bp of London (CChR, 1341–1417, p. 143). To be held at the manor.

PLESHEY 5663 2143. Borough 1336 (BF, p. 110). 1334 Subsidy £13.23.
M (Prescriptive: borough) recorded before 1274 (R.H. Britnell, ‘Essex markets before 1350’, Essex Archaeology and History (1981) xiii, p. 16). Market stalls were noted in 1336. Markets continued in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries (Beresford, p. 436).

PRITTLEWELL 5877 1867. 1334 Subsidy £158.86.
M (Charter) Mon; gr 18 Oct 1238, by K Hen III to earl of Oxford. Mandate to the sh of Essex to cause him to have it. The entry on the charter roll is damaged (CChR, 1226–57, p. 236; CR, 1237–42, p. 110). In Apr 1248 and Jan 1249, the countess of Kent alleged that the earl of Oxford had set up the market six years ago, to the detriment of her market at Rayleigh, Essex (q.v.) (GEC, x, p. 215).
M (Charter) Fri; gr 15 Sept 1257, by K Hen III to Hugh de Vere, earl of Oxford (CChR, 1226–57, p. 475). To be held at the manor.
F (Charter) vfm, Nativity of Mary (8 Sept); gr 15 Sept 1257, by K Hen III to Hugh de Vere, earl of Oxford (CChR, 1226–57, p. 475).

M (Charter) Wed; gr 18 Jul 1270, by K Hen III to Robert Walerand (CChR, 1257–1300, p. 149). It is possible that one of these markets was wrongly transcribed, or that one was intended to supersede the other.
M (Charter) Tues, gr 16 Mar 1342, by K Edw III to Walter de Chesthunte (CChR, 1341–1417, p. 10). To be held at the manor.

RAMSDEN BELLHOUSE 5719 1943. 1334 Subsidy £41.05.
M (Letter Close) Thurs; mercatum, gr 25 May 1221, by K Hen III to Nicholas de Barentun. To be held at the manor of ‘Rammeden’ until the king came of age. Notice to the sh of Essex (RLC, i, p. 459b). In 1219 and 1227 Nicholas de Barentun held half an acre in the vill of Hatfield Regis (Bk of Fees, i, no. 276, ii, no. 1347). Place- Names of Essex notes the connection between Nicholas Barentun and Ramsden, but does not make it clear whether this was Bellhouse or Crays (P.H. Reaney, The Place-Names of Essex (Cambridge, 1935), p. 168).

RAYLEIGH 5809 1909. 1334 Subsidy £73.31. Market town c.1600 (Everitt, p. 175).
M (Prescriptive) recorded 1181, forum, held by K Hen II (PR, 27 Henry II, p. 108). This was the escheated land of Henry de Essex, part of the honor of Rayleigh. On 18 Feb 1227, K Hen III granted Hubert de Burgh, earl of Kent and Margaret his wife unspecified ‘markets’ at three manors, including Rayleigh, together with the manors themselves, as part of a larger grant. The days of the market(s) are not given (CChR, 1226–57, pp. 12–13). Granted again to Hubert de Burgh, earl of Kent and Margaret his wife on 28 Nov 1228 (CChR, 1226–57, p. 82). In Apr 1248 and Jan 1249, the countess of Kent alleged that her market of Rayleigh was being damaged by that at Prittlewell, Essex (q.v.) (GEC, x, p. 215).
On 18 Feb 1227, K Hen III granted Hubert de Burgh, earl of Kent and Margaret his wife ‘fairs’ at three manors, including Rayleigh, together with the manors themselves, as part of a larger grant. The dates of the fair(s) are not given (CChR, 1226–57, pp. 12–13) Unspecified ‘fairs’ at four places, including Rayleigh, were granted to Hubert de Burgh, earl of Kent and Margaret his wife on 28 Nov 1228 (CChR, 1226–57, p. 82). This suggests that one or more fairs may have existed at Rayleigh.
