According to a charter forged in the twelfth-century and attributed to 972 K Edgar created a market at Peterborough and stated that there was to be no other between Stamford, Lincolnshire (q.v.) and Huntingdon, Huntingdonshire (q.v.); this may incorporate an earlier tradition (The Electronic Sawyer <http://www.trin.cam.ac.uk/chartwww/eSawyer.99/eSawyer2.html>, no. 787). In 1146 Pope Eugenius III confirmed Abbot Martin in possession of the market at Peterborough and Martin (in office 1132–55) was remembered for having changed the market place (mercatum) there (W.T. Mellows (ed.), The Chronicle of Hugh Candidus: a monk of Peterborough with A. Bell (ed.), La gester de Burch (London, 1949), pp. 110, 122, 173). On 15 May 1270, K Hen III confirmed a charter of 12 June 1253 confirming the A of Peterborough his fair on f Peter and Paul (CChR, 1257–1300, p. 142).
