| BLETCHINGLY 5328 1508.
      Borough 1226 (BF, p. 167). 1334 Subsidy £22.50. A castle town and western
outpost of Clare family interests south of the Thames, rivalling the Warenne
centre at Reigate, Surrey (q.v.). Fair 1587, 2

shops and stalls at Bletchingly market were noted (VCH Surrey, iv,
      p. 253). On 14 Jan 1296, an inquest into the property of the recently deceased
Gilbert de Clare, earl of Gloucester, noted that he had held Bletchingly
market. The day of the market was not given (CIPM, iii, p. 371). |

K Hen III to Gilbert son of William de Colevyle (CChR, 1257-1300,
      p. 18). |

    | | On 14 Jul 1245, John de Gatesden was pardoned 24m. for which
he had been summoned to the Exchequer for two charters, which he did not
have, granting a market in the manors of Carshalton and Broadwater, Sussex (q.v.) (CR, 1242-7,
      p. 327). |

    | CHERTSEY 5043 1670. 1334 Subsidy £40.22.
Probably a place of significance on the Thames by 666 when Erkenwald (later
bp of London) founded the abbey, which was refounded before 964. Market
      town c.1600 (Everitt, p. 475). |

    | | M | (Charter) Mon; gr 1 Dec 1281, by K Edw I to A and C of Chertsey (CChR,

    | | F | (Grant: other) Peter ad Vincula (1 Aug); gr 1133, by K Hen I to William
A of Chertsey (Regesta, ii, no. 1768). The fair is described only
as three days at the feast of Peter ad Vincula. The sh of Surrey
was notified that all resorting to the fair were to have the kings
peace and no one was to do them wrong on pain of the kings forfeiture.
The A of Chertsey was to have all the customs and liberties in connection
with his fair which belonged to the other barons who had their fairs. |

      manor. |

    | CHIPSTEAD
5275 1575. The place-name, meaning 'market-place' and first recorded in
spurious charters attributed to 727 and 933, or otherwise in Domesday Book,
suggests an early site of trade (P. Sawyer, Anglo-Saxon Charters: an
annotated List and Bibliography (London, 1968), nos. 422, 1181; cf J.E.B.
Gover, A. Mawer and F.M. Stenton, The Place-Names of Surrey (EPNS,

    | | F | (Prescriptive). 12789 [7 Edw 1], Gilbert
de Clare claimed a fair formerly held by his father, Richard de Clare (d.

      at the manor. |

    | CROYDON 5319 1654. 1334 Subsidy £137.09.
      Market town c.1600 (Everitt, p. 475). Fair 1587, 21 Sept (Harrison,
      p. 396). See also VCH Surrey, iv, p. 217. Croydon's
markets are discussed further in O. Harris, 'The Archbishops' Town: the
Making of Medieval Croydon', Proceedings of the Croydon Natural History
and Scientific Society (forthcoming, 2005). |

    | | M | (Prescriptive). There are several references
to a market which pre-date the first charter of 1276. The archbp of Canterbury
in 12367 received stallage fees of 40s at Croydon (Lambeth Palace
Library ED 1193). A weekly market appears to have existed by 1241, when
the jurors of Wallington hundred reported that the archbp's bailiffs were
taking a toll in Croydon market throughout the year, whereas they had previously
collected it only between 10 June and 8 July (PRO JUST 1/869, m 4). The
      market (possibly including a fair) was at farm £8 13s 4d p.a. in 12701
and 12734 (PRO SC 6/1128/1; BL, Add MS 29794). These arrangements
appear to have been clarified by the charter of 1276 and a licence perhaps
issued in 1343 (see below). |

    | | M | (Charter) Wed; gr 10 Dec 1276, by K Edw I to Robert, archbp of Canterbury.
To be held at the manor (CChR, 1257-1300, p. 202). VCH erroneously
records this as a Fri market (VCH Surrey, iv, p. 217). |

    | | M | (Charter) Thurs; gr 17 Apr 1314, by K Edw II to Walter, archbp of
Canterbury (CChR, 1300-26, p. 271). To be held at the manor. |

    | | M | (Charter?) Sat,
supposedly gr 1343, by K Edw III to archbp Stratford of Canterbury (VCH
Surrey, iv, p. 217). This supposed charter, whose existence is implied
by VCH, is problematical. It is first mentioned in A. Ducarel, Some
Account of the Town, Church and Archiepiscopal Palace of Croydon, Bibliotheca
Topographica Britannica no 12 (London, 1783; text originally written in
      1754), p. 3; and Appendix, p. 60. Ducarel's only cited source is the 1344
commission of oyer and terminer into a case of violent opposition to the
collection of tolls at the fair (now CPR, 13435, p. 386). This record
does not mention a market. The earliest certain reference found to the Saturday
market (which may have replaced a market on another day of the week) is
dated 1595: BL, Add MS 31853, f. 20v, John Norden, 'A Chorographicall discription
of the severall Shires and Islands of Middlesex, Essex, Surrey, Sussex,
Hamshire, Weigte, Garnesey & Jarsey'. |

    | | F | (Charter) vfm+6, Botulph (17 Jun); gr 10 Dec 1276, by K Edw I to
Robert, archbp of Canterbury. To be held at the manor (CChR, 12571300,
      p. 202). There is evidence for extended trading at
this season before 1276 (see markets, above). In 1241 it was reported that
it had been the practice for the archbp's bailiffs to collect toll in Croydon
market only between 10 June and 8 July, whereas they now collected it throughout
the year (PRO JUST 1/869, m 4). The grant of the St Botolph Fair, covering
16-24 June, may have been intended to clarify the period of permitted seasonal
trading now that a weekly market had been established. This fair may have
disappeared or have been reduced in length by the 1340s, when a licence
to hold a fair on 24 June appears to have been granted: see below. |

    | | F | (Charter) vfm, Matthew (21 Sept); gr 17 Apr 1314, by K Edw II to
Walter, archbp of Canterbury (CChR, 130026, p. 271). To be
      held at the manor. |

    | | F | (Charter) f, Nativity of John the Baptist (24 Jun); gr 1343, by K
Edw III to archbp Stratford of Canterbury. According to VCH, this
charter is not enrolled (VCH Surrey, iv, p. 217). This
supposed charter, whose existence is implied by VCH, is problematical.
It is first mentioned in A. Ducarel, Some Account of the Town, Church
and Archiepiscopal Palace of Croydon, Bibliotheca Topographica Britannica
no 12 (London, 1783; text originally written in 1754), p. 3; and Appendix,
      p. 60. Ducarel's only cited source is the 1344 commission of oyer and terminer
into a case of violent opposition to the collection of tolls at the fair
(now CPR, 13435, p386). This indicates that a licence for a
fair had been issued recently (within the primacy of the present archbp,
i.e. since 1333), but does not specify the date of 1343. Even the date of
the violence is unclear, but it seems possible that the incident had taken
place in a previous year. The licence may have been issued so as to clarify
the period(s) of permitted seasonal trading following the disappearance
or decay of the fair of St Botolph (see above). |

    | DORKING 5165 1495.
1334 Subsidy £111.34. William de Warenne, earl of Surrey, died in 1240 and
was succeeded by his son John (GEC, xii, pt i, pp. 5007). Market
town c.1600 (Everitt, p. 475). See also VCH Surrey, iii, pp.
      141, 142. |

    | | M | (Prescriptive) recorded 1240, mercatum, held by W. earl Warenne.
In 1241, an enquiry was held into the market in the time of W. earl Warenne
(CRR, xvi, no. 1630). This market may have been one of the two prescriptive
markets, held on Mon and Thurs, recorded in 1278, or may have been a reference
      to both of them. |

    | | M | (Prescriptive) Mon; recorded 1278, mercatum, held by John
de Warenne, earl of Surrey (QW, p. 745). The earl successfully claimed
to hold a Mon market from time out of mind. |

    | | M | (Prescriptive) Thurs, recorded 1278, mercatum, held by John
de Warenne, earl of Surrey (QW, p. 745). The earl successfully claimed
to hold a Thurs market from time out of mind. |

    | | M | (Prescriptive: borough) recorded 15 Dec 1215, mercatum, held
by P. bp of Winchester, when a mandate was sent to the sh of Surrey that
the day of the market was to be changed to Thurs. The market was held at
the manor (RLC, i, p. 242). It is likely that the original day of
      the market was Sun. |

    | | F | (Charter) vfm, All Saints (1 Nov); gr 14 Apr 1233, by K Hen III to
P[eter] bp of Winchester (CChR, 1226-57, p. 177). Mandate to the
sh of Surrey to proclaim the fair and cause it to be held, 21 Apr 1233 (CR,
1231-4, p. 210). Fair recorded in the thirteenth and seventeenth centuries,
when according to VCH it was held on All Souls (2 Nov) (VCH Surrey,
      ii, p. 587). |

    | GODSTONE 5354 1524. 1334 Subsidy £92.

but does not give dates (VCH Surrey, iv, p. 287). |

61). To be held at the ch. |

    | | F | (Letter Close) vfm, Holy Trinity (Easter dep); feria gr 17
Sept 1251, by K Hen III (CR, 1247-51, pp. 503-4). To be held in the
      kings town. |

    | | F | (Grant: other) vfm+2, Holy Trinity (Easter dep); gr 1327x46, by K
Edw III to men of Guildford. On 16 Jul 1346, the charter was said to have
been granted recently by the king. VCH dates it to 1340. On 16 Jul
1346, K Edw III granted the men of Guildford a fair on Mon next after Whitsunday+4
(Easter dep) in lieu. The fair date was changed as the men of Guildford
complained that other neighbouring fairs were held at Holy Trinity (CChR,
      1341- 1417, p. 52; VCH Surrey, iii, p. 562). |

seisin of the market with the manor and hundred of Godalming, formerly held
      by Edeline del Broc. |

by K Ric II to John, bp of Salisbury (CChR, 1341-1417, p. 343). To
be held at the town. |

    | LAMBETH 5307 1790. 1334 Subsidy £38.37. The markets and
fairs were probably associated with Archbp Hubert Walters plans to enlarge
his residence at Lambeth and establish a new collegiate ch there. The value
for the 1334 lay subsidy relates to Lambeth and Lambeth Dean (Glasscock,
      p. 302). |

one palfrey for the fair (PR, 4 Hen III, p. 44; PR, 5 Hen
III, p. 214). In 1278-9, it was stated that the fair was only held on the
      f of Mary Magdalene (QW, p. 747). |

into the eighteenth century. It became more important than the fair
at Shalford, Surrey (q.v.) (VCH Surrey,
            iii, p. 9; VCH Surrey, iv, p. 427). | SHALFORD 5002 1472. 1334 Subsidy £103.19. See also

to John de Guildford, parson of Shalford (VCH Surrey, iii, p. 110).
In 1287, the fair was said to have been granted by K John to be held in
the ch yard of Shalford (erroneously recorded as Stratford)
subsequently being moved outside on account of the growth of population
(CIM, 1219-1307, no. 1409). This was one of the most important fairs
in the county, but was subsequently eclipsed by the fair at St
Catherines Hill, Surrey (q.v.) (VCH Surrey, iv,
      p. 427). |

    | SOUTHWARK 5325 1803. Borough early
tenth century (Defence, pp. 218-19). Mint 979- 1154. 1334 Subsidy
£171.49. Roman site. The burh noted in the Burghal Hidage was probably the
      southern bridgehead settlement opposite London (Defence, pp. 218-19;
      M. Carlin, Medieval Southwark (London, 1996), pp. 8-12, 123-6, 186,
      201-2). Market town c.1600 (Everitt, p. 475). Fair 1587, 8 Sept (Harrison,
      p. 395). See also VCH Surrey, iv, pp. 139-40 . |

    | | M | (Prescriptive: borough, mint) recorded 1258 (VCH Surrey,
iv, p. 140). By the 1270s this market at St Thomass Hospital was one
of two markets in Southwark. Both may have developed out of the twelfth
century corn market at the hospital, which was then situated within the
precinct of Southwark priory, near London Bridge. After 1212, the hospital
moved and the market associated with it was established at its new gate
at Trenet Lane, within the manor of the archbp of Canterbury. It was recorded
in 1295 and 1387 and was held on three days each week: Wed, Fri and Sat.
The market declined in the late fifteenth century due to the competition
from the Guildable manor market; in 1504 it was said to have been discontinued,
but it was operating in 1522 (M. Carlin, Medieval Southwark (London,
1996), p. 201). In 1275, certain tolls in an unspecified number of markets
in the borough of Southwark were due to the earl of Surrey (CPR,
1272- 81, p. 173). In 1550, K Edw VI granted the City of London the liberty
of holding markets in Southwark on Mon, Wed, Fri and Sat (VCH Surrey,
      iv, pp. 140). |

    | | M | (Prescriptive: borough, mint) recorded 1270s (M. Carlin, Medieval
Southwark (London, 1996), p. 201). This second market in Southwark is
evidenced from the 1270s. Like the other market, it may have developed out
of the twelfth century corn market. It was attached to the Guildable manor
and was situated on the High Street. The market days were Wed and Fri; in
1550, the market was extended to include Mon and Sat. |

    | | F | (Prescriptive) recorded 1275 (CPR, 1272- 81, p. 173). In 1275,
certain tolls in an unspecified number of fairs in the borough of Southwark,
were due to the earl of Surrey. |
