Labour Party (Great Britain), Labour Party song book : labour anthems, traditional songs & community favourites (London : The Party, 1955) [Heisler] P1390

Music and politics have long been connected, and the Labour Party first published a song book in 1933. An updated collection of songs was published in 1955, with additional songs 'from at home and abroad', as well as from Co-operative Movements. The 1955 collection shown here begins with 'The Red Flag', 'England, Arise!', 'The International' and 'Jerusalem', but also includes more unexpected songs like 'Jingle Bells' and 'Auld Lang Syne'. Songs from around Great Britain, like 'Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau' ('Land of my Fathers') in both Welsh and English, make up the majority of the songs. However, there are a number of international songs, mostly with English lyrics, including 'The Marseillaise' from France, 'Himno de Riego' from Spain, 'Bandiera Rossa' from Italy, and 'Dump the Bosses off your Back' from the United States of America.
