Written by American poet and activist Lawrence Ferlinghetti just prior to the failed invasion of the Bay of Pigs in Cuba by the Central Intelligence Agency of the United States, this poem was easily reproduced and distributed as a folded broadside. Ferlinghetti also read this poem to audiences, its first lines questioning the politically-motivated doubts about Fidel Castro's mental health. Ferlinghetti owned a bookshop, City Lights, which was centre of the Beat movement, of which he is considered a co-founder.
