I am of course very pleased that Joanne Bailey has found my survey of gender in history to be welcome and useful. Her summary of the book's contents is particularly apt, and her response to my "afterword" directed at the reader is exactly what I was hoping to elicit when I followed the series editor's suggestion and ended on a personal note. This is a field that is expanding exponentially every day, so that one of the most difficult problems I faced when writing the book was deciding what to include (or better said, what to leave out) of my suggestions for further reading, particularly for fields that are very well studied, such as British or U.S. women's history. My apologies to any readers of this journal whose work was not included, and I would certainly welcome any suggestions of things I may have missed in case this goes into a second edition at some point.
