The History PhD: Past, Present and Future
Co-hosted with the Royal Historical Society and the History Subject Centre at the Higher Education Academy
It is 90 years since the first PhDs in History were awarded in the UK. This day conference brought together representatives from the leading graduate schools in history, as well as Research Councils UK and History Lab, to investigate where the history doctorate has been, how it has been reshaped in recent decades and where it might go in the future. Speakers included Michael Bentley (St Andrew’s), John Morrill (Cambridge), Joanna Newman (British Library), Paul Meller (ESRC) and Kevin Sharpe (Queen Mary, University of London).
