Cairncross, Sir Alexander Kirkland (1911–1998)

An economic historian whose textbook provided the basis for the undergraduate study of the subject in the 1950s and 1960s, Cairncross was also significant for his role as economic adviser to the government in the build-up to the 1967 sterling crisis.
