Reddaway was an urban historian most noted for his work on 17th–century London. In the 1950s and 1960s he was acknowledged as the leading expert on that city. As well as being a pioneer in the development of the history of the metropolis, he also forged close links with a variety of London-based organisations outside the academic world, which again helped to open up the parameters of the field.
