Journals

Just as important for professionalisation as the late 19th-century flowering of historical organisations and projects was the emergence of a journal devoted to the promotion of historical scholarship, the English Historical Review (EHR).

This section covers the stories of the EHR and some of the other significant journals which followed it, whether in terms of breaking new ground (Past and Present and the History Workshop Journal (HWJ)), or of reaching out to a wider audience (History Today). The Historical Journal has made a point both of encouraging young scholars and of concentrating on the early modern period and after, while the Economic History Review played a leading role in the rise of economic and social history following the Second World War.

Additionally organisations like the Royal Historical Society (Transactions) and the Institute of Historical Research (Historical Research) have produced long-running publications of their own.
