History Workshop Journal (HWJ) was founded in 1976, emerging from the Ruskin College 'history workshops' of the late 1960s and early 1970s, which focused both on 'history from below' and on encouraging the participation of non-professional historians. Since that time HWJ has seen the disciplines it championed (eg women's history) move into the mainstream, and itself come to resemble other more conventional academic journals, but it continues to attempt to provide a vehicle for critical and politically engaged history.
