The largest institution for the study of art history in Britain, the Courtauld Institute was founded in 1931. Its initial aim was to provide an education in attribution for postgraduates wishing to enter the art business, but under the influence of the Warburg émigrés, and later the leadership of Anthony Blunt, it widened its sense of the discipline, in terms of its ambitions, approaches and its materials of study. It is now based at Somerset House, and is an independent college of the University of London.
