Founded in 1926 along with its journal, the Economic History Review, the Economic History Society (EHS) enjoyed the same long post-war boom as its subject, seeing both a growth in membership and in economic history appointments. Since the 1980s its membership has fallen, mirroring the closure of separate economic history departments. Despite this institutional decline, however, economic history remains ubiquitous within the mainstream of history and the EHS is still an important institution.
