Gender breakdown for teachers in history

The table below shows changes in the gender balance of history teachers in higher education over the last 60 years, taken from the IHR's Teachers of History in the United Kingdom series. Though the overall percentage of women teachers has almost doubled in this time, it is interesting to note that this has not been a linear progression – the figure was lower in 1990 than in had been in 1950. It should also be borne in mind that these relative changes are part of a massive overall increase in teacher numbers over this period.
