The Blue Plaques scheme has been running since 1867, under the stewardship of, successively, the Society of Arts, London County Council, the Greater London Council and now English Heritage. It aims to commemorate the link between famous figures and their London addresses, with the criteria for inclusion encompassing the recommendation of their peers, a contribution to human happiness and being recognisable to a well-informed passer-by. It provides an interesting view on the profession to see which historians have passed these tests.
