Prior to the 20th century the history of architecture was largely the preserve of architects, but during the last hundred years it has emerged as a serious academic discipline in its own right. Much influenced by the European émigrés of the 1930s, particularly Pevsner and his 'Buildings of England' series, the sub-discipline also had strong trans-Atlantic links, with the Society of Architectural Historians of Great Britain (founded 1956) initially being a chapter of the American Society.
