The history of education has a variety of elements to it, including histories of educational legislation, histories of schools and schooling, as well as studies of individual teachers and educators. More recently histories of 'educational experience' have been attempted, often taking approaches drawn from social history and utilising oral history techniques, while cultural historians have used history textbooks as a means of exploring changing attitudes to issues like colonialsim and nationalism. Quantitative methods have been both employed and criticised in ways that reflect the wider field.
