Over the course of the 20th century the nature of religious history has changed dramatically. Once considered to constitute simply the history of the institution of the Church, the influence of social and cultural history has shifted emphasis towards individuals and localities, and towards a broader definition and examination of religious behaviour. Emphasis has also moved away from the Church of England to a study of other Christian churches both in Britain and abroad, and writing of such histories is far less likely than in the past to be informed by their authors' own beliefs.
