Two distinct topics lie under the title philosophy of history. It can either describe attempts to provide a general explanation of developments in history (such as Marxism), or can address questions as to the nature of the historical method (how historians research and write history). The latter has become a topic of greater interest with more attention being directed at the practices of historians as a consequence of the linguistic and cultural turns. Some have sought to distinguish between the two meanings by terming the latter 'historiology', while others would deem considerations of historical method to be part of historiography.
