BRIDLINGTON 5189 4671. 1334 Subsidy £95. Although listed as a borough in 1086 in Beresford and Finberg, there is some doubt as to whether the burgesses actually belonged to Bridlington. There are no subsequent references to a borough here (BF, p. 185; D.M. Palliser, 'An Introduction to the Yorkshire Domesday', in The Yorkshire Domesday (London, 1992) p. 21). Bridlington has not been recorded as a borough in this Gazetteer, but was evidently a place of commercial significance before 1200. Market town c.1600 (Everitt, p. 469). See also VCH Yorkshire (East Riding), ii, pp. 54-6.
M (Formerly Prescriptive) Sat; recorded 6 Dec 1200, mercatum, held by ch of St Mary of Bridlington and the Ca (RCh, p. 81b). This shows that the charter was a confirmation, rather than a grant. In 1293, the P of Bridlington was holding a Sat market (QW, p. 224). Market continued in the twentieth century (VCH Yorkshire (East Riding), ii, p. 54).

This shows that the charter was a confirmation, rather than a grant. In 1293, the P of Bridlington was holding the fair (QW, p. 224).

M (Letter Close) Fri; mercatum, gr 22 Jan 1221, by K Hen III to Ralph de Nevill of Scottun. To be held at the manor until the king came of age (RLC, i, p. 446b). In 1231, it was alleged that the market (the day of which was not given) was being held by Ralph de Neovill, Simon de Cockefeuld and Isabella his wife, to the detriment of that at Hunmanby, Yorkshire (q.v.). The market had been set up by Brian de Insula during the minority, to last only until K Hen III came of age. However, the defendants successfully asserted that they had not raised a market (CRR, xiiii, no. 1090).
M (Grant: other) Sun; gr 1227x22 Aug 1240, by K Hen III to William de Nevill. On 22 Aug 1240, K Hen III granted to William de Nevill that the day of the market held at his manor on Sun by the king’s grant would in future be held on Fri (CChR, 1226-57, p. 253). In Jan 1241, Gilbert of Gaunt and William of Nevill drew up a final concord concerning William’s market at Filey, which was alleged to be damaging Gilbert’s market at Hunmanby, Yorkshire (q.v.). Gilbert granted that William and his heirs could hold a Fri market at Filey (J. Parker ed., Feet of Fines for the County of York, 1232 to 1246, Yorkshire Archaeological Society record series, lxvii (1925) p. 102). In the autumn of 1242, Gilbert de Gant brought a case against William de Nevill regarding the market, alleging that William had broken this final concord (CRR, xvii, no. 829). On 29 May 1256, K Hen III granted the burgesses of Scarborough, Yorkshire (q.v.) the right to plead in the king’s name in his court for the abolition of the market of Filey (CPR, 1247-58, p. 477). In 1293, Richard de Malebys claimed a market, which pertained to the manor, with Margeria the wife of John de Heslerton and Cecilia wife of Robert de Heselerton, of the inheritance of Ralph, his great- grandfather (QW, p. 207). POCKLINGTON 4803 4490. 1334 Subsidy £144.50. Although listed as a borough in 1086 in Beresford and Finberg, there is some doubt as to whether the burgesses actually belonged to Pocklington. There are no subsequent references to a borough here (BF, p. 186; D.M. Palliser, 'An Introduction to the Yorkshire Domesday', in The Yorkshire Domesday (London, 1992) p. 21). ROTHERHAM 4429 3929. Borough 1409 (BF, supplement, p. 65). 1334 Subsidy £60. Market town c.1600 (Everitt, p. 469).
M (Prescriptive: borough) recorded 9 Feb 1283, held by John de Vescy, son of William de Vescy, who granted to brother Thomas de Steyngreve, A of Rufford, and the ch of St Mary, Rufford and the M the lordship of half the market. K Edw I inspected and confirmed this charter on 9 Feb 1283 (CChR, 1257-1300, p. 265). On 12 Jun 1285, K Edw I inspected and confirmed a charter of John de Vescy, son and heir of William de Vescy, quitclaiming to the M of Rufford the ownership of the market of Rufford (CChR, 1257-1300, p. 291). In 1293, the A of Rufford was holding the market (QW, p. 206). It therefore appears that John de Vescy owned the market, then granted half to the abbey and finally quitclaimed the remainder.
M (Charter) Fri; gr 1 Apr 1307, by K Edw I to Robert de Waddesleye (CChR, 1300-26, p. 90). To be held at the manor.
M (Charter) Fri, gr 4 Mar 1309, by K Edw II to Edmund de Dacre (CChR, 1300-26, p. 126). To be held at the manor.
M (Charter) Mon; gr 7 Feb 1316, by K Edw II to the A and C of Rotherham, at the manor (CChR, 1300-26, p. 291).
F (formerly Prescriptive) f+1, Edmund (20 Nov); feria, recorded 2 Jan 1208, held by Eustach de Vescy (RCh, p. 174). This appears to be a confirmation of an exisiting fair and a change or extension of the date. 1208, Nova Oblata: Eustace de Vesci owed 100m. for having a fair at Rotherham and a port and a market at Alnmouth, Northumberland (q.v.). He also owed two palfreys pro removendo termino ferie sue de Roderham sicut in carta regis (PR, 10 John, pp. 154-5). F (Charter) 1+vf+5 Edmund (16 Nov); gr 7 Feb 1316, by K Edw II to the A and C of Rufford (CChR, 1300-26, p. 291). Presumably the fair on Edmund the archbishop (16 Nov) granted in 1309 superseded the fair on Edmund the martyr (20 Nov), first recorded in 1208. It has been assumed that the feast of the fair granted in 1316 related to Edmund the archbishop.
