The City

History in Focus invited four academics to write short pieces on various aspects of the city from their own research perspectives. The resulting articles cover a broad range of issues, including an examination of the etymology and notions of cities in history, a discussion of the significance of cities as producers and consumers of culture, and an evaluation of the way in which historians have used the concept of modernity to explore recent changes in urban culture, economy and politics. We hope they will be of interest to historians and students of urban history.
