The Dictionary of National Biography (DNB) aims to provide details of significant British lives, and as such is significant both as a resource for historians and as a repository of historical writing. The project itself has passed through various stages over time. The original dictionary was published by George Smith as a 63–volume set between 1885 and 1901. Following its acquisition by Oxford University Press this was updated with a series of supplementary volumes throughout the 20th century. The current online version was launched in 2004 as the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography, and continues to be regularly updated.
