Tout, Thomas Frederick (1855–1929)

Tout was the driving force behind the creation of the Manchester History School, which (influenced by European developments) strove to impart proper historical techniques to students, helped by the innovation of the special subject. He also opened up new areas in the study of medieval history through his work on the administrative machinery of government.
