In 1983 the Social Science Research Council (SSRC) (established in 1965) was restructured into six committees addressing the areas of economic affairs, education and human development, environment and planning, government and law, industry and employment, and social affairs, and renamed the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC). One of seven UK research councils, The ESRC has been of particular importance to social and economic historians in providing funds for research and training. The Cambridge Group for the History of Population and Social Structure was notably funded for a period by both the SSRC and the ESRC.
