Demographic history
Demographic historians or historical demographers are interested in the characteristics of human populations in the past, explored primarily through quantitative analysis of data sources such a censuses and parish registers. The most significant work in this field in Britain has been produced by the Cambridge Group for the History of Population and Social Structure, set up in 1964, with advances in computing technology and improvements in methodology allowing for the increasingly sophisticated interrogation of often incomplete datasets.
