William Hesketh Lever ©Leverhulme Trust
The Leverhulme Trust was established upon the death in 1925 of William Hesketh Lever, the first Viscount Leverhulme. Its initial remit was to cover certain trade charities and also to provide scholarships for the purposes of research and education, but following a reorganisation in 1983 the current Trust concentrates upon these latter two aims. Encompassing all subject areas, it has proved a major source of funding for history, particularly through the provision of opportunities for post-doctoral research leave, and professorial chairs such as those of Comparative Metropolitan History and Contemporary British History at the Institute of Historical Research.
