Wellcome Trust

The Wellcome Trust was established upon the death of Sir Henry Wellcome in 1936, with instructions to support the history of medicine and allied sciences. Initially the Wellcome Library and Museum were set up, but the period from the 1960s saw the establishment of Wellcome-funded or jointly funded academic units and centres for the study of the history of medicine, most notably at University College London and in Manchester.
