This section contains a brief analysis of HESA's figures for the number of undergraduates and postgraduates studying in the humanities from 1993/94 (when HESA was founded) onwards.
The figures are also compared (where possible) with older statistics produced by the Department of Education and Science and published as Education Statistics for the United Kingdom.
It should be noted that in 2002/3 HESA introduced a new subject classification called the Joint Academic Coding System (JACS), so from 2002–2003 the categories for subjects change, which makes a comparison across the full range of years much more difficult.
This section contains figures supplied by UCAS comparing changes in the numbers of applications and acceptances for higher education places in general, for the humanities as a whole and for history in particular from 2002–2006.
