Antiquarianism, archaeology and history can be seen to have developed as parallel approaches to the study of the past, but with the professionalisation of the latter two disciplines in the late 19th century antiquaries were increasingly seen as eccentric amateurs, obsessed with the material trivia of the past but employing no coherent methodology in its analysis. However, antiquarianism has fed into a number of newer historical sub-disciplines, including family history, social history and local history, and the Society of Antiquaries maintains a flourishing membership.
