Many of the forms in which history is now disseminated date back to the late 19th century, which saw the birth of the scholarly journal, and also the emergence of local history societies whose output remains significant. The digital age has tended to provide new channels rather than create new forms – a journal will now increasingly be made available in both print and online versions. Whilst circulation for academic monographs has fallen, there has been a marked increase in the popularity of other types of publication, with family history, military history, transport history and some general histories all finding a wide audience.
