Maitland, Frederic William (1850–1906)
© Master & Fellows of Downing College Cambridge
A constitutional historian of medieval England, Maitland's legacy was methodological. He was among the first to apply standards of professional scholarship to the study of sources. As well as being one of the founding fathers of modern legal history, he was also noted for his distinctive style, which transformed a potentially dry subject into literature.
