Legal history obviously overlaps the disciplines of both law and history, forming part of the mainstream of the latter in the early days of professionalization through the constitutional histories of the likes of Maitland. As political history has changed its emphases (with the increase in interest in economic, social and cultural factors) the role of legal history in it has diminished, mainfesting itself instead in other areas such as the history of the courts or of the judiciary. In addition legal-historical work has also been increasingly applied to subjects such as class, gender and ethnicity.
