The roots of History UK (HE) go back to the 1980s when two parallel organisations developed: the History at the Universities Defence Group (HUDG) (for universities) and the Campaign for Public Sector History (PUSH) (for polytechnics, colleges and institutes of higher education). Both were formed initially to defend the history profession against proposed cuts, but subsequently expanded their remit to seek to influence government policy in other areas (such as the Research Assessment Exercise (RAE)) as well as to collect data on the state of the profession. The two merged in 1992, and became History UK (HE) in 2005.
