Community history refers to the popular practice of history research and writing in settings outside university history departments, in towns, villages and cities throughout Britain. Its development is connected with the emergence of the social history/'history from below' movement of the 1960s, as well as with that of black and women's history. The nature of its practice has placed it outside the mainstream of academic history, which has challenged its methods as being insufficiently rigorous, but this has been countered by pointing both to its popularity and to its success in empowering the particpants in its programmes.
