Contemporary history emerged as a fully fledged sub-discipline in Britian in the 1980s with the establishment of both the Institute of Contemporary British History (later the Centre for) and the journal Contemporary Record (later Contemporary British History. Despite recent attempts to to redirect its focus towards the social and cultural contemporary history has maintained a strong political element, with the Public Record Office (now The National Archives) continuing to be of great significance in terms of source material.
