Institute of Historical Research
Senate House, home of the IHR
Founded in 1921, the Institute of Historical Research (IHR) was the virtually single-handed creation of A. F. Pollard, who sought to create a School of History in London to equal those already existing in Germany and the USA. The IHR was to serve as a centre for postgraduate historical research, encompassing seminars, training courses in historical methods and a comprehensive library, as well as organising the annual Anglo-American conference. Over the years the IHR has also hosted a range of different centres and projects, including the History of Parliament, Victoria County History (VCH), Centre for Contemporary British History (CCBH) and the Centre for Metropolitan History (CMH).
