Conference

The History in Education Project Conference took place on Thursday 24 November 2011. The aim of the Conference was to disseminate the findings of the research, publicise the book and website and allow discussion about the future of history teaching in state schools. The programme and podcasts are set out below, as are some photographs from the Conference Day.

The History in Education Project’s Conference was held on Thursday, November 24th 2011 in the Beveridge Hall, South Block, Senate House, University of London, Malet Street, London WC1E 7HU.

The conference programme was as follows:

 

10.00 am Tea/coffee
10.30am Initial remarks by Professor Sir David Cannadine (introduced by the Director of the Institute of Historical Research, Professor Miles Taylor) who will discuss the findings of the History in Education Project.

10.50am Speech by the Rt Hon Michael Gove MP, Secretary of State for Education
11.10am Discussion
11.30am Dr Jenny Keating and Dr Nicola Sheldon (introduced by the Director of the Institute of Education, Professor Chris Husbands) will present the History in Education Project’s new website.

12.30am Lunch (light refreshments can be purchased from the Senate House café or there are a number of nearby cafés and restaurants)
2.00pm Panel of school teachers, Geraint Brown, Michael Fordham, Steve Mastin, Cathy McIlroy, to discuss current issues affecting the teaching of history, chaired by John Hamer
3.30pm Tea/coffee
4.00pm Panel of politicians, Lord Baker, Baroness Williams and Gordon Marsden MP, to discuss past and current issues in history teaching, chaired by Professor Sir David Cannadine
5.30pm-6.00pm Close of conference
6-8pm Launch in the Macmillan Hall, Senate House of The Right Kind of History: Teaching the Past in Twentieth-Century England (Palgrave Macmillan 2011) by David Cannadine, Jenny Keating and Nicola Sheldon
